An ankle sprain can happen in half a second. One wrong step off a curb, a rolled foot on a trail, an awkward landing after a jump. Rest doesn't mean total immobilization. Multiple NHS trusts now recommend early weight bearing because research shows it helps sprains heal faster. Walk gently with your heel striking first. If that causes sharp pain, back off and wait a few more days.
Ice limits swelling and numbs pain. Apply an ice pack in a towel for 10 to 20 minutes every two to three hours during the first 48 hours. Never directly on skin.
